When you’re planning a trip, you need to consider a lot of things. Do you have enough vacation time saved up? Is your passport up to date? What about replacing your luggage?

But many people fail to consider one of the most important parts of vacation planning: applying for a new credit card.

The right travel credit card can make or break your trip. Some cards have extra perks that can save you hundreds on insurance coverage, and others have hefty sign-up bonuses that can pay for the whole flight.

Picking the right card can be a challenge, especially if you’ve never had a travel card before. Check out our picks below for the best credit cards for taking a vacation.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card is one of the best options for individuals and families going on vacation, especially internationally.

The card currently has a 60,000-point bonus offer, which equals $750 when redeemed through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. Customers have to spend $4,000 or more in the first 90 days to qualify for this offer. The bonus is enough to pay for two round-trip tickets, depending on the time and location. This offer only applies to those who haven’t had a Sapphire Preferred or Reserve card within the past two years, so if you’re unsure, call customer service to check.

Customers earn 2X points on all travel-related and dining purchases including airfare, lodging and restaurants. They earn 1X points on all other purchases.

Transfer your points to Chase’s travel partners, which include Marriott, British Airways, United Airlines, and more. Points are worth 25% more when you redeem through Chase directly.

There is a $95 annual fee and a 18.24% to 25.24% variable APR. There are no foreign transaction fees. Since the average foreign transaction fee is 3%, a couple who spends $4,000 on a vacation would save $120 in fees.

The card provides other travel benefits to make your vacation easy and stress-free. This includes trip cancellation/interruption insurance, which reimburses you for any pre-paid expenses if you get sick, have severe weather, or have to cancel the trip for another reason. Having travel insurance with the card means you don’t have to purchase it separately from your airline. Chase also has travel and emergency assistance services if you need medical or legal help while you’re abroad.
