Major Credit Bureaus Free Credit Report

In 2003 the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, also known as FACTA, passed a law that allows everyone to get a free copy of their credit report from the three major credit bureaus. Those credit bureaus include TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian.

In order to get your credit report for free, you have to either call 1-877-322-8228, go online and order your request, or print out a form requesting your credit report and mail it in.

Keep in mind that you can only do this once a year. Unless there is a special circumstance before the year is up you have to wait a full twelve months for your next report. The special circumstances include if you are unemployed and are planning on looking for a job within 60 days, you are on welfare or are a victim of identity theft.

There are states such as Georgia that have passed laws that allow you to have more than one credit report per year. Double-check the laws in your state if you find yourself needing more than one free credit report per year.
